If you got a thing for NuMex peppers, you’ll be bursting with joy with the Sunburst pepper for their impressive flavors and productivity rates! The Chili Pepper Institute bears the NuMex name where they create chili hybrids at New Mexico State University (NMSU), and they’re focused on creating tasty peppers that are more productive and disease resistant. With this in mind, the university created another delicious and impressive pepper variety that you’ll want to grow in your garden.
The Numex Sunburst pepper plant will produce great yields of outstanding orange peppers, looking similar to a Cayenne pepper but slightly thicker. It will grow to around 3 inches long and will become upright with pointed ends. It'll mature from green to orange before turning red, but we recommend harvesting the pepper when it ripens to orange for the best flavors. We haven’t determined the heat level yet but could range from 5,000 to 30,000 SHUS like most NuMex peppers. In other words, expect some heat to hit your tongue!
