Our Live Plant Process

Our Live Plant Growing & Shipping Process

At Pepper Joe's, our live pepper plants are grown with care from the very beginning to ensure customers receive strong, healthy plants ready to thrive.

All of our pepper plants are greenhouse grown hydroponically in rockwool, allowing for consistent nutrition, controlled growing conditions, and strong root development. Many varieties are started as early as December, giving plants ample time to mature before shipping season begins in April.

Each plant is grown to approximately 4 inches before being prepared for shipment. Prior to shipping, every plant is individually inspected by a member of our greenhouse team to ensure it meets our quality standards.

Plants are shipped in a protective mini greenhouse made from recycled material, specially sourced to help safeguard live plants during transit. This packaging helps maintain plant structure and reduce stress while traveling to your door.

When will my pre-order live plant ship?

Pre-order live plants begin shipping in April. Orders are fulfilled based on the shipping week you selected at checkout.
Not sure which week you chose? Log in to your account (or create one using the same email) to view your order details.

All non-Pre-order live plant orders ship the next business day.

Live plants ship only to the contiguous U.S.

Live Plant Refund & Replacement Information

Refund & Replacement Policy

We offer a replacement or refund for live plants reported as damaged or unsatisfactory within a reasonable timeframe, typically 48–72 hours after delivery. Clear photos of the plant(s) and packaging may be required to process a claim.

Additional limits:

We can’t offer refunds or replacements for issues reported more than 7 days after transplanting, as plant health can be affected by factors outside our control.
No refunds or replacements will be issued for dead plants more than 30 days after delivery, under any circumstances.
We offer one replacement per order for all products, including seeds and live plants.
If a replacement is needed but the item is out of stock, we’ll provide a gift card or refund equal to the item value.

It died

The plant looked pretty sad when it arrived. After weeks of gentle care, it turned completely yellow, the leaves fell off and died.

We apologize that your plant arrived in poor condition. We take great care in preparing and packaging our plants for shipment, but because they are live plants, they can sometimes arrive droopy, wilted, or stressed after traveling through the shipping process. Additionally, some varieties may experience transplant shock as they adjust to their new growing environment.

Unfortunately, our live plants are currently out of stock for the season. However, we would be happy to send some seeds your way to help get your 2026 planting season off to a great start. We successfully grew Ghost Pepper plants from these same seeds this year and would love for you to have that same success.

Plant arrived looking healthy but died within 1 week

We’re sorry to hear your plant didn’t survive. Unfortunately, there are several factors that can contribute to plant stress, including transit conditions, transplanting, and environmental changes after arrival.

We always encourage customers to reach out to us at customerservice@pepperjoe.com if a plant appears stressed within 24–48 hours of delivery, along with a photo, so we can help troubleshoot and find the best way to move forward.

Very disappointed did not survive. You guys should not send out pepper plants or any type of garden plant. That is so little it should be at least medium average size.

Plants arrived very healthy and sturdy. Potted them in pots to get them ready for planting outside. They seem to be good and I fully expect them to turn out very good! 10/10 would recommend!

very disappointed

I'm not a new gardener and I've grown ghost peppers before. I'm in Ohio and planted in pots so I can bring them inside for the winter. I started with good Miraclegro soil, good spot in the window that I have used for years for plants, and even a grow light to make up for the shorter daylight at this time of year. Still only 1 of the 8 plants I bought survived past 2 weeks.

Not what I expected plants where very tiny did not look healthy

Ordered 8 pepper plants… only 2 are doing well, 3 have died and and 3 are just barely trying.

Plants too soon

The plants I received were 2 1/2 inches tall. I followed the directions and repotted them and moving them.outside during the day then inside at night to harden off. The plants never grew. I also ordered Thai dragon plants with the same results. 4 plants, 40 dollars, zero peppers, very disappointed.

Small plants didn't grow

Out of the two ghost pepper plants I purchased only one survived planting and that one isn't really grow or producing anything. I accept some responsibility for this as I am not an experienced gardener but bought plants from Pepper Joe's last year and they did well. I will probably not buy from Pepper Joe's again.

My pepper trees died

I contacted customer service before to let them know that all of my puppet trees died. First it was only two I sent them pictures and they said they would replace them. I never got them then eventually none of them grew. They stayed real tiny, which I didn’t expect that I would be getting such tiny plants and then they all died off. What more can I say? Guess I won’t buy any more from you guys.

Too Anxious

I put them out way too soon. Still alive, but stunted. I should have kept them in my greenhouse longer.

One of the two was in really bad shape I'm working on trying to save it

I have purchased pepper plants twice and both times all the plants have died. I have other pepper plants from other places that are doing fine

Didn’t last

Out of the 6 plants that I ordered only 2 survived. I ordered 2 of each, ghost,scorpions, and reaper. One ghost and one reaper has started to grow. The other 4 died within 20 days. I have grown peppers for years and this was the first time ordering from Joes and will say I’m disappointed. My local Lowe’s store plants are already producing peppers.

Plants were in perfect condition. QR code included gives directions to website that has clear instructions for transplanting and hardening.

Peppers were small this year compared to last year. Despite lots of care and good conditions they have not done well and are an expensive disappointment.
