Our Live Plant Process

Our Live Plant Growing & Shipping Process

At Pepper Joe's, our live pepper plants are grown with care from the very beginning to ensure customers receive strong, healthy plants ready to thrive.

All of our pepper plants are greenhouse grown hydroponically in rockwool, allowing for consistent nutrition, controlled growing conditions, and strong root development. Many varieties are started as early as December, giving plants ample time to mature before shipping season begins in April.

Each plant is grown to approximately 4 inches before being prepared for shipment. Prior to shipping, every plant is individually inspected by a member of our greenhouse team to ensure it meets our quality standards.

Plants are shipped in a protective mini greenhouse made from recycled material, specially sourced to help safeguard live plants during transit. This packaging helps maintain plant structure and reduce stress while traveling to your door.

When will my pre-order live plant ship?

  • Pre-order live plants begin shipping in April. Orders are fulfilled based on the shipping week you selected at checkout.
  • Not sure which week you chose? Log in to your account (or create one using the same email) to view your order details.

All non-Pre-order live plant orders ship the next business day.

Live plants ship only to the contiguous U.S.

Live Plant Refund & Replacement Information

Refund & Replacement Policy

We offer a replacement or refund for live plants reported as damaged or unsatisfactory within a reasonable timeframe, typically 48–72 hours after delivery. Clear photos of the plant(s) and packaging may be required to process a claim.

Additional limits:

  • We can’t offer refunds or replacements for issues reported more than 7 days after transplanting, as plant health can be affected by factors outside our control.
  • No refunds or replacements will be issued for dead plants more than 30 days after delivery, under any circumstances.
  • We offer one replacement per order for all products, including seeds and live plants.
  • If a replacement is needed but the item is out of stock, we’ll provide a gift card or refund equal to the item value.

pepper plants!

I bought four different pepper plants this summer. the carolina reaper, chocolate ghost pepper, apocalypse scorpion and the dragon's breath. and regards to how it going, the carolina reaper plant is having a hard time the most. the leafs are very small and frankly looks sick. it can't handle direct sun yet and inam careful watering it cuz it never seems to dry out. with the scorpion plant it cant handle direct sunlight as well and it burns really easy. as for the other 2 plants the dragon breath and the chocolate ghost pepper are doing well and the plants are about the same size and plenty of leaves. but the other two need extra care and frankly im not sure if the carolina reaper plant is gonna make it this summer.

Apocalypse Scorpion Pepper Plant

I received a plant that was not in good position. I followed all directions in acclimating the plant but it has been a struggle from the beginning. The plant still looks bad. It is still only about 4 inches tall . It has been a struggle a struggle keeping ip alive. The ghost peppers I received were also in bad condition but I have been able to het them out of their pots and into the ground. They are still only about least growing some. I am disappointed in the peppers I received this year.

I order 2 plants. One is doing good. The other hasn't grown more than 3 inches and the one that has hasn't grown 3 inches is the one I ordered first. I think the plant looks good and green, but no growth

Actually, the pepper plant was in poor shape when it arrived...tried to nurture it but it died in a couple of days...I sent an email describing the outcome...didn't receive a response/message back...wowsers...I was really looking forward to getting some scrumptious, hot ones...my pretty wife and I just love hot peppers...😬

Great Experience

I received the live seedling looking healthy. I introduced it to the outdoors per instructed and eventually planted it in a 5-gallon fabric pot using Fox Farm soil. The plant is now 3' tall and beginning to flower.

Pepper Joes has great quality plants

I’ve never ordered plants online so this was a new experience for me however I couldn’t find super hot peppers at any stores in my area so I found Pepper Joes website when I searched online and gave them a chance. My Apocalypse Scorpion Peppers arrived in great quality and didn’t take long to ship at all either, I love the method in which they handle their packaging, it works super well to maintain the quality of the plants as I ordered live plants.

Apocalypse Scorpion Pepper Plant

Only one of the pepper plants actually lived, and today, is only about 6 inches tall with no flowers and no peppers. I live in Maryland, where I grow lots of peppers that do quite well including this year (Trinidad Scorpion, Bhut Jolokia, Carolina Reaper, etc.) so I do not know why these haven't survived and grown accordingly.

I have been growing peppers and other plants for 30 plus years. The plants arrived dry and sickly. Despite all of my powers and skills, they could not be saved.

I would have asked for a refund, but honestly couldn't be bothered.

Did not grow

Barely any growth

Had them growing in house for couple weeks. When moved outside any growth has stopped and they seem to still alive but not growing. Very small plants.

Thank you for your review! We’re sorry to hear that these plants are not growing for you. This could be due to a variety of reasons but a cause for this could be overwatering. It is important to be really sparse with watering initially, to the point where you’re only watering when they just start to droop. Because they are in the rockwool and not bare root the water tends to accumulate and hold in the rockwool, right where the young roots are which can stunt growth. In addition, growth may be slow as they adjust to their environment for the first week weeks outside. I hope this helps!
