Our Live Plant Process

Our Live Plant Growing & Shipping Process

At Pepper Joe's, our live pepper plants are grown with care from the very beginning to ensure customers receive strong, healthy plants ready to thrive.

All of our pepper plants are greenhouse grown hydroponically in rockwool, allowing for consistent nutrition, controlled growing conditions, and strong root development. Many varieties are started as early as December, giving plants ample time to mature before shipping season begins in April.

Each plant is grown to approximately 4 inches before being prepared for shipment. Prior to shipping, every plant is individually inspected by a member of our greenhouse team to ensure it meets our quality standards.

Plants are shipped in a protective mini greenhouse made from recycled material, specially sourced to help safeguard live plants during transit. This packaging helps maintain plant structure and reduce stress while traveling to your door.

Healthy, fast delivery and reasonable price

Plant was in great shape when received and arrived very quickly. The price for one plant was reasonable especially if you aren’t planting several from seeds. Will consider Pepper Joe’s again. I have always had good luck with seeds from here too.

Red Peter's are very hard to get started

I have been trying to get these to grow for the past 3 years and each set had different difficulties getting started. I'll usually buy 6 plants, 2 Red Peter's, 2 super hots, and 2 hots. Each time, the Red Peter's die within a month of receiving while the other 4 grow very well and live through the winter. Every time I get the Red Peter's, even though i treat them the exact same as the other 4 plants that survive and do well, all of the first leaves fall off before new leaves are set. It's puzzling to me how this can happen when the identical process for the other 4 plants, which have been different strains every year for 3 years, is fine for them, but the red Peter's struggle.

Hi Jon,
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and for corresponding with us! We hope the replacements do much better this time. Feedback like yours is important to us so we can improve and provide the best experience for our customers, and we really appreciate it. If you need anything else, don't hesitate to reach out!

My Peter Peppers Name Is Peter Johnson

I am so excited about my Peter Pepper plants I purchased from Pepper Joe that I renamed my family of 12. Sad to say 4 have perished but the other 8 plants are thriving and 1 foot tall. I attached them to the railing in 1 gallon pots and they love their new home. I also have Collard Greens and tomatoes on the same railing but the butterflies and their offspring stay clear of my Peter Peppers. I wanted to share a picture but I don't see that option. Thanks Pepper Joe!

Peter Peppers plants no Luck

I had the worst time with the Peter Pepper plants! I cared for them like previous years but the plants slowly died. I’m sure I did not over water the plants. But we did have quite a bit of rain, especially in May.
I guess I’ll go back to seeds as I have better luck that way.

Hi Donna,
Thank you for your review of our Red Peter Pepper Plants! We're bummed to hear that these didn't do well for you. A member of our team will be reaching out so we can look into what may have caused this and offer assistance. Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention!

Live plants

They came perfectly healthy. But all 8 of them died within 3 weeks. I think I over watered them

Dana,
Thank you for your review! Overwatering can be a cause of early plant death. It is important to be really sparse with watering them initially, to the point where you're only watering when they just start to droop. Since they are in the rockwool and not bare root the water tends to accumulate and hold in the rockwool, right where the young roots are. This can stunt growth because the roots are remaining too wet and not getting enough airflow to reach out for more water and grow larger root and leaf systems. If you have any further questions regarding this, please email us at customerservice@pepperjoe.com.

Generic Review

This is just a generic review, because I see multiple reviews for different plants that all same the same thing. I had an issue with my plants not growing. They weren't dying but the weren't getting any bigger or producing any fruit. All the other plants and jalapeños, Habenaros were thriving, but the peppers I bought from Pepper Joe's were not.

After clearing outa lot of the excess tomatoes and various other veggies in my garden we decided to transplsnt our peppers to different areas of the garden. Upon doing so we noticed the decomposable planter pots had not decomposed at all which is the reason they weren't growing any taller. We removed the planting pots and put them back in the ground and low and behold after time the plants began growing. Unfortunately it was too late in the year and we were unable to get much fruit off them. We had no luck with 7 different varieties. The only ones we had luck with were the mad hatters.

That being said this year we are going to try to resolve the pots right away. Just wanted to share some positivity to what was some what of a bad experience.

Kyle,
Thank you for sharing your experience with growing our plants! We're happy to hear you figured out what was causing your plants not to grow and are ready to try again this year. Pepper plants can definitely be pretty fussy when it comes to their environment so great job uncovering this issue! Please reach out to us if we can be of any assistance in the future!

Great plants

These peter pepper plants came in a timely fashion, were well packed, healthy and larger than I expected. I had grown petter peppers for years in my zone 10 New Orleans garden. They were readily available in nurseries, so available in fact, that I never bothered to save seeds. Now, however I have moved to a small, mid-western town, zone 6. No peter peppers in nurseries!!!!! I was thrilled to find these plants (and seeds) for sale here at Pepper Joe's. A life-saver for my kitchen garden, and for my frig, which is once again never without it's bottle of peter pepper vinegar. Thanks, Pepper Joe's!

Not a one

I got 4 seedlings at the beginning of the growing season, since nobody had them around town. We were super excited when they arrived, because of how good they looked. Acclimated them over a 2 week period before putting them into the garden (same place we have grown them before). By the end of the season they might have grown half an inch on two of the plants and three inches on the other two. Unfortunately, not a single pepper. 10 or so flowers came and went, but fruit never followed. So sad!

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with a review and we are sorry to hear about your experience with these seedlings. Our customer service team would be happy to look into this. You can contact us by emailing customerservice@pepperjoe.com.

Disappointed and Overpriced

Received 2 tiny plants for $20. I was out of town for a family emergency when they were delivered. Contacted Pepper Joe’s, sent photos, requested a refund and did not get a response back. I will not be purchasing anything from Pepper Joe’s; overpriced for nothing.
