Our Live Plant Process

Our Live Plant Growing & Shipping Process

At Pepper Joe's, our live pepper plants are grown with care from the very beginning to ensure customers receive strong, healthy plants ready to thrive.

All of our pepper plants are greenhouse grown hydroponically in rockwool, allowing for consistent nutrition, controlled growing conditions, and strong root development. Many varieties are started as early as December, giving plants ample time to mature before shipping season begins in April.

Each plant is grown to approximately 4 inches before being prepared for shipment. Prior to shipping, every plant is individually inspected by a member of our greenhouse team to ensure it meets our quality standards.

Plants are shipped in a protective mini greenhouse made from recycled material, specially sourced to help safeguard live plants during transit. This packaging helps maintain plant structure and reduce stress while traveling to your door.

So far so good

Slow growing but they are growing! Won't have a more in depth review until they produce. Currently about 10-12in tall and growing. The two were planted on April 11. This is the growth as of June 23 (images attached).
Soil: Miracle Grow Performance Organics (strawberry bag)
10gal grow bags.

Worth the wait

I got mine in April of 2025. I put it in a five gallon pot, and by the end of summer, it was four feet tall, but only flowered days before frost. Brought it inside to save it under lights--all the blossoms dropped. Coaxed it to survive all winter, put it back out in May, and it still didn't bloom until late June. Now, in mid-July, 2026, it's got about thirty nice-sized pods just starting to ripen. The flavor profile is distinctly fruity followed by a heat that builds, tops out at hornet intensity, and stays there!

Hi Charles,
Thank you for sharing your growing journey with the Pink Tiger X Peach Bhut Pepper! It's fantastic to hear how it thrived and produced such impressive pods. Enjoy the peppers and the fiery flavor! Thanks for choosing Pepper Joe’s.

Two of the four died following your directions. The two that made it are healthy

Hi Frederick,
We are sorry to hear that your pepper plants did not make it. We know how disappointing that can be after putting in the time and care.

The shipping and transplanting process can be a big shock for pepper plants. While we take great care in preparing and shipping them, sometimes plants are unable to recover from that stress, and we truly wish that was something we could prevent.

We are happy to help with the next steps.

Thank you,

Xtra Small plant

Received a live plant. It was barely 1/2” tall with two leaves. It didn’t last more than a couple days. I’m not sure if it was because I ordered the earliest date to receive plants. All other plants in the order were in better shape and survived

I love these plants. Don't necessarily grow them for the peppers, but for deck decoration, I love the black foliage. These are my second pair for my deck

Packed and shipped extremely well. Took longer to arrive than I thought it would. Healthy plants, but very small. Be prepared to put under a grow light for a while. These is the most expensive plants I’ve ever purchased. With shipping it was $31 & change. They are growing well, but a while before I can put them in my garden. Thankfully, I have a long growing season. I am hoping for a good harvest! One plant had a baby I was able to tease out and it’s doing well also. So hopefully I’ll have 3 plants! Overall, I’m very happy with the plants, just not the price.

Wild Peppers!

These plants were quite the adventure this year! Because these pepper plants seem to be hybrids, the ones I received were as wild as can be. I got a few peppers that look like the web picture, but I also got long peppers that looked like cayennes, wrinkled little globes that looked like brain peppers and some small peppers with crazy very long “stingers” like a scorpion pepper. They were all fairly purple for the most part with tiny streaks of pink. Heat levels were all over the map too. The peppers tended to have pretty thick walls and some could be added to a dish with no problems while another small pepper was so brutal hot that we all suffered. It would be interesting to pick your favorite pepper from the many many types on display to save for seed the following year to see if it would grow true. My only caveat to someone wanting to try these plants would be that the plants weren’t big producers, so don’t count on lots and lots of peppers. Even so, the plants are gorgeous too so they’d brighten a home as ornamentals! Lots of fun overall.

Awesome Peppers

I was sent two plants and one died immediately, but the other did well and is living its best life. It is a beautiful plant with dark purple leaves. This plant is very hardy. No bugs would touch it and on hot days my other plants were droopy, but this plant stood proud.

Because no one ever leaves reviews AFTER they have pods...

I have harvested about 4 ripe pods out of about 20-25 on the plant. Just added 3 of them to a pepper mash and they have a quick, sharp (reminiscent of scorpion) heat. A fairly short-lived, intense heat. I am trying them out in an appropriate cinnamon peach hot sauce.

They were quite oily inside with thin walls and light on seeds/pith. If you want a healthy, beautiful superhot plant with unique pods, give these a shot.

Unclear results

I wasn’t able to properly grow it out, mostly like from the heat and the fact the roots struggled to take in potting mix. I hope to grow it out some to at least over winter and try again in the spring. Tips would be helpful thanks. The purple Jalapeño have been a success however

Mixed results overall

I ordered live plants and got 2 that looked like they had barely sprouted. I kept them inside for a bit until they could be hardened off.

Once outside, the plants grew fairly well.

However, 2 plants and a few months of growth and I ended up with one thin pepper about 1.5" long and a pencil thickness around. Barely any flowering.

The plant was under a 30% shade cloth through most of the summer so far because of the intense heat. I used Happy Frog soil. Each week, the plants would get Happy Frog Tomato and Veg granular food and Alaska Fish fertilizer. Watered daily in the hottest weather but really just made sure the soil never dried out.

I started switching over to Fox Farm "Tiger Bloom" and "Big Bloom" (one on each plant) to see if I could force any flowering. No luck

Like I said, leaf growth is impressive. Large leaves and lots of them. Little to no stress on the plant. But basically no flowers.

I took a couple clippings and will try to propagate and see if I have any more luck but I'm pretty bummed with them this time around.

Might try ordering again but not sure it's worth if vs just going to buy pepper plants from my local nursery.

Hi C.J.,
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review! We're sorry to hear that your plants haven't borne flowers and fruit very well this year. Switching to a fertilizer that aimed at stimulating flower and fruit growth is a great idea. As you may know, too much nitrogen can lead to leafy growth but a lack of flowering. That plus heat can be a significant factor, so we're saddened that you didn't see results despite your great efforts. More info about this issue can be found here on our site, just in case you find any useful tips: https://pepperjoe.com/blogs/blog/solutions-to-a-pepper-plant-not-producing-flowers-or-fruit#:~:text=Lack%20of%20Nutrients%20Can%20Cause%20Poor%20Flowering%20and%20Fruiting&text=You%20also%20will%20want%20to,lush%20but%20not%20produce%20fruit. Thanks again for your feedback, and best of luck next time!
