Are There Peppers Hotter Than the Carolina Reaper?

For nearly a decade, the Carolina Reaper reigned supreme as the hottest pepper in the world. Its blistering heat and fruity, floral flavor made it legendary among chili enthusiasts. But as pepper breeders continued pushing the limits of capsaicin, the Reaper’s title was finally challenged and officially surpassed.

So, are there peppers hotter than the Carolina Reaper?
Yes, and one now holds the official crown.

The Carolina Reaper: A Former World Record Holder

In 2013, Guinness World Records officially crowned the Carolina Reaper the hottest chili pepper in the world, with an average heat level of 1,569,300 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). Some individual pods tested well above 2 million SHU, cementing its reputation as a true super-hot.

For years, the Reaper dominated the pepper world until 2023.

Pepper X: The Current Hottest Pepper in the World (Official)

Pepper X is now the official hottest pepper in the world, verified by Guinness World Records in August 2023.

  • Species: Capsicum chinense

  • Heat Level: ~2,693,000 SHU (average)

  • Origin: United States

  • Breeder: Ed Currie (creator of the Carolina Reaper)

Pepper X doesn’t just edge out the Reaper, it blows past it by over 1 million SHU. The pepper shares a similar bumpy, gnarled appearance and fruity base flavor but delivers an earthier, more aggressive burn that lingers far longer.

Peppers That Rival or Exceed the Reaper (Unofficial)

While Pepper X is the only pepper officially hotter than the Carolina Reaper, several others have tested at or above Reaper-level heat in unofficial or limited lab tests. These peppers are widely recognized in the chili community but lack Guinness certification. For those science nerds out there, read our blog to learn about how SHU is actually measured!

Trinidad Moruga Scorpion

  • Heat: Up to ~2,000,000 SHU

  • Notes: Former record holder (2012), intensely hot with fruity undertones

7 Pot Douglah

  • Heat: Up to ~1,853,000 SHU

  • Notes: Dark brown pods with a nutty, earthy flavor and extreme heat

Komodo Dragon

  • Heat: ~1,400,000–2,200,000 SHU (reported)

  • Notes: Slow-building heat with a deceptive fruity start

Chocolate Bhutlah

  • Heat: ~1,500,000+ SHU (reported)

  • Notes: Ghost pepper × 7 Pot Douglah cross with deep, earthy heat

7 Pot Primo

  • Heat: ~1,000,000–1,500,000 SHU (reported)

  • Notes: Often compared to the Carolina Reaper due to similar shape and lineage

Primotalii

  • Heat: ~2,200,000+ SHU (reported)

  • Notes: Long-tailed pods with violent heat and complex flavor

Dragon’s Breath

  • Heat: ~2,480,000 SHU (reported)

  • Notes: Extremely controversial pepper with limited testing data

Gator Jigsaw

  • Heat: ~1,500,000 SHU (reported)

  • Notes: Related to Pepper X genetics; very aggressive heat

The Apollo Pepper: Hotter Than Pepper X?

The Apollo Pepper, another creation from Ed Currie, is rumored to exceed 3,000,000 SHU in internal testing. It is a cross between Pepper X and the Carolina Reaper, but:

  • ❌ No Guinness certification

  • ❌ Seeds not publicly available

For now, Apollo remains a mystery pepper known primarily through diluted hot sauces and limited releases.

Why “Unofficial” Heat Levels Matter

Scoville ratings can vary significantly due to:

    • Growing conditions

    • Individual pod variability

    • Testing methods

Guinness World Records requires strict lab testing protocols and multiple samples. Many peppers may occasionally test hotter than the Reaper, but only Pepper X has met the requirements to be officially recognized.
