Description:

The name behind the Mortgage Lifter Tomato comes from a West Virginia grower in the 1940s, who after cross-breeding many large tomato varieties, started selling these tomato plants for $1 each and was able to pay off his $6,000 mortgage!

These almost 9 ft. tall heirloom tomato plants bear high yields of some HEAVY fruits, averaging 1-2 lbs. each with some weighing as much as 4 lbs! Make sure this plant is staked and has the appropriate support it needs to grow these fruits. Mortgage Lifter Tomatoes have a bright reddish-pink color when they mature, which is when you get the most flavor out of them.

Enjoy the rich, sweet flavors of Mortgage Lifter Tomatoes. These large fruits are juicy and can be eaten as is, sliced up for sandwiches and other fresh foods, or cooked in cuisines that call for a sweet, zesty taste.

This is an indeterminate tomato variety.

So far so good. First time growing tomatoes from seed. There are several green ones and I’m excited to have some soon. Love fresh garden tomatoes. Thanks Pepper Joes!

    • What You'll Need

      Soil and Tray Method

      Seed Starting Supplies
    • Plant your Seeds

      1. Pre-saturate your seed starting soil mix. Ensure the seed starting mix is fully saturated prior to planting your seed.
      2. Make a ¼-inch hole in the center of each seed starting cell. A #2 pencil eraser is a great tool for making these holes.
      3. Place your seed and cover gently with soil.
You can plant up to 4 seeds per cell to help ensure successful germination.
    • 4. Place your heat mat under  your base tray and your humidity dome on top. For best results, set your temperature controller between 75 - 80 degrees.

      5. Place your plant light above the seed starting tray and turn on. Refer to the plant light manufacturers instructions for the optimal distance. Plant light should remain on for 14 to 16 hours per day.

      6. Enjoy watching them grow! See our full instruction page below for more information.
