Description:

Chocolate Bhutlah peppers are an extreme super hot variety known for their deep brown coloration, brutal heat, and complex flavor. A cross involving Bhut Jolokia genetics, this variety is prized by serious heat enthusiasts for delivering intense capsaicin levels paired with earthy, slightly sweet undertones.

Grown hydroponically in a controlled environment, our Chocolate Bhutlah pepper plants arrive healthy, pest-free, and ready to establish once transplanted.

What You’ll Receive

  • Chocolate Bhutlah pepper plant hydroponically grown in rockwool (no soil)

  • Plant height at shipping: Approx. 4” tall

  • Actively growing with a strong, well-developed root system

  • Care instructions included

  • Bonus: 4-pack orders include a FREE sample compost tea fertilizer

Because our plants are grown hydroponically, they will require an adjustment period and it will take a few weeks for them to acclimate when transplanted into soil or containers. To learn more about our methods and to ensure success, review the sections below Our Live Plant Growing & Shipping Process and When Your Live Pepper Plants Arrive.

About the Chocolate Bhutlah Pepper

Chocolate Bhutlah is a Capsicum chinense variety bred for extreme heat and rich coloration. Plants typically grow 3–4 feet tall and produce heavily textured pods that ripen to a deep chocolate-brown color. Pods often feature bumpy skin and occasional stinger-like tips.

Flavor is often described as earthy and slightly sweet, but the heat arrives quickly and intensely, making this pepper best suited for experienced growers and careful culinary use.

  • Heat Level: Extremely hot

  • Flavor: Earthy, slightly sweet, and intensely spicy

  • Pepper Appearance: Dark brown, heavily textured pods

  • Culinary Use: Hot sauces, powders, dehydrated flakes, and ultra-spicy recipes

  • Pepper Pod Size: Medium-sized 3" pods

Our Live Plant Process

Our Live Plant Growing & Shipping Process

At Pepper Joe's, our live pepper plants are grown with care from the very beginning to ensure customers receive strong, healthy plants ready to thrive.

All of our pepper plants are greenhouse grown hydroponically in rockwool, allowing for consistent nutrition, controlled growing conditions, and strong root development. Many varieties are started as early as December, giving plants ample time to mature before shipping season begins in April.

Each plant is grown to approximately 4 inches before being prepared for shipment. Prior to shipping, every plant is individually inspected by a member of our greenhouse team to ensure it meets our quality standards.

Plants are shipped in a protective mini greenhouse made from recycled material, specially sourced to help safeguard live plants during transit. This packaging helps maintain plant structure and reduce stress while traveling to your door.

When Your Live Pepper Plants Arrive

When Your Live Pepper Plants Arrive

Your live pepper plants are shipped in custom packaging to protect them during transit. Some mild wilting after shipping is normal and usually resolves quickly.

Upon arrival:

  • Gently unbox your plant and inspect it.
  • The roots are surrounded by rockwool, a lightweight, soil-free growing material that helps retain moisture and protect the roots. Do not remove the rockwool.
  • Some drooping after shipping is normal. Water immediately upon arrival and allow up to 24 hours for recovery.

  • If your plant arrives with significant damage or doesn't improve after 24 hours, please contact us immediately via our contact form.

Transplanting:

  • Plant the rockwool end 2–3 inches deep into well-draining potting soil using a container at least 1 gallon in size.
  • Water thoroughly after planting and allow excess moisture to drain.

Before moving outdoors:

  • Soil temperatures should be 65°F or warmer
  • Nighttime temperatures should remain above 55°F
  • No risk of frost

Once conditions are right, harden off your new plants gradually by introducing them to outdoor conditions over several days before full sun exposure.

If you have any concerns, please reach out through our contact form and our team will be happy to help.

No Peppers Yet

Ordered 50 ago as of tomorrow 7-7-26 and not a single pepper
Kinda disappointed

Hi Brian,

We are excited that your pepper plants are growing and thriving. A Chocolate Bhutlah Pepper Plant takes about 90 to 120 days to produce ripe peppers after the plant is transplanted outdoors. You can reach out to us at customerservice@pepperjoe.com.

Thank you,

Chocolate Bhutlah Pepper Plants

We planted them about three weeks ago and they haven't grown at all. I've given them a boost with the fertilizer that is suggested for these plants. Is there anything else you would recommend?

Hello Cathy,
Three weeks of little to no top growth after transplanting is often normal and can be part of a plant's adjustment, or 'transplant shock,' period. During this time, newly planted vegetation typically focuses its energy on establishing and expanding its root system rather than producing new foliage or fruit.

Since you have already fertilized, we recommend holding off on adding more fertilizer for now, as excessive fertilization can potentially damage young roots and cause additional stress.

Please review the following key checkpoints to help encourage healthy growth:

• Moisture Management: Check soil moisture manually before watering. Water deeply when needed, then allow the top couple of inches of soil to dry slightly before watering again. This encourages roots to grow deeper and stronger.

• Soil Temperature: Peppers thrive in warm soil. If soil temperatures are too cool, plant growth may slow significantly regardless of fertilization. Consistently warm conditions will help promote both root and top growth.

• Avoid Over-Fixing: Try not to make multiple changes at once. Frequent adjustments to watering, fertilizing, or growing conditions can create additional stress and delay recovery.

As long as the plant remains healthy in appearance and is not showing signs of severe decline, patience is often the best approach while the root system becomes established.

I hope this helps!

6 died but 6 new received!

I bought 6 plants and sent an email upon arrival that the plants were moldy. The medium they were sent in didn’t hold up well. I replanted them and followed the guidelines as well as my own experience growing super hots in the past years but nothing could save them. The company reached back out to me and sent 6 new plants which I’m very excited and happy about!

Devan,
Thank you for the feedback on your order! We are so sorry to hear that the rockwool did not hold up well and that these plants did not survive. Our team would be happy to investigate this issue further and work with you on a resolution. A customer service representative will be emailing you shortly to further assist. We look forward to working with you!

Hardening but is Dying of Transparent Holes. I Give this 2 Stars, Sadly

I don't know if I received the short end of the stick or what. I received these plants in great packaging, and they came very quickly, but they had small holes like my other four plants (2 different types). By the second day, the holes got worse, and the corners looked yellow before even getting the chance to transplant. The hardening is going decent, especially for the temps, but those transparent holes appear more, and the corners look worse. I hope they pull through because I spent $45 on my entire order and followed everything said in the videos.

The were alive and healthy but don't grow much

The seedlings arrived in good shape and they were packed well. I would have liked some growing suggestions with them as they don't seem to be doing much.

Unfortunately I am disappointed. After planting them, they have not grown at all.

I have bought plants before from other places and they did well. I don't know what went wrong with these plants. I am still waiting to see what they will do.

Slightly disappointed

I had several purchases within a couple weeks of live pepper plants, almost 2 dozen all together. I had gotten yellow t-Rex, gator jigsaw, red primotalii, chocolate bhutlah, chocolate Carolina reaper, regular Carolina reaper, almost half died within a weak of receiving them. All the gator jigsaw, yellow t-Rex,chocolate Carolina reaper died , half the chocolate bhutlahs and 1 red primotalii’s died. I am not new to growing, I have been growing hot peppers for about 15 years now. I only ordered these cause I was running low on all the peppers that I grow myself from seeds. I make and sell hot sauces and powders and seasonings. I had way more orders this year and was really counting on these plants to help bring in some more income to help with getting a new prosthetic leg. It’s really unfortunate that so many of the plants died. I should have known better cause I bought a few several years ago and all but 1 died. I was wrong to give them a second chance.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback and we are sorry to hear you are not satisfied with your experience. Customer reviews help us to improve our processes as well as the overall customer experience. If you have any questions or would like to discuss this further, please give us a call at 888-660-2276.

Super Nice Online Pepper Plant Experience

The slugs really went after my seedlings. I didn't think any were going to survive. In a moment of desperation, I ordered four Chocolate Bhutlah seedlings from Pepper Joe's.

The box they arrived in was really beautiful. I potted them right away and put them under my grow lights. They perked up within a few days and now they are absolutely thriving. They are they biggest, healthiest pepper plants I have this year.

Thanks Pepper Joe's! 5 stars.

Great Purveyor

Love all the plants from these folks. I've had great success growing and harvesting from these super hot beauties. I got the Chocolate Butlah a little late in the season, bu they are growing beautifully and, if need be, will overwinter this year.
