The Santaka Hot Japanese Pepper is a very popular ornamental variety used in a lot of Asian cuisines. Released in 1955 from the Tochigi prefecture of Japan, this pepper has circulated around the region as a must-have cooking pepper.

Santaka pepper plants are great for containers as they grow up to 3 ft. tall. Pods grow upward at a rapid rate, changing from green to a bright red color. These plants look beautiful with its dark green foliage and bright red peppers. Harvesting Santaka peppers is easy – they pop right off the plant!

These peppers are known for their hot and spicy flavor that adds quite a bit of heat to any food dish. Many Asian cuisines use these fresh peppers in a variety of dishes such as stir-fries and soups. Santaka peppers can also be dried into a great pepper powder. While growing, these pepper plants work as great ornamental plants that add a bit of variety to your outdoor or indoor foliage.

  • What You'll Need

    Soil and Tray Method

    Seed Starting Supplies
  • Plant your Seeds

    1. Pre-saturate your seed starting soil mix. Ensure the seed starting mix is fully saturated prior to planting your seed.
    2. Make a ¼-inch hole in the center of each seed starting cell. A #2 pencil eraser is a great tool for making these holes.
    3. Place your seed and cover gently with soil.
You can plant up to 4 seeds per cell to help ensure successful germination.
  • 4. Place your heat mat under  your base tray and your humidity dome on top. For best results, set your temperature controller between 75 - 80 degrees.

    5. Place your plant light above the seed starting tray and turn on. Refer to the plant light manufacturers instructions for the optimal distance. Plant light should remain on for 14 to 16 hours per day.

    6. Enjoy watching them grow! See our full instruction page below for more information.
