🔥 About the Thai Dragon Pepper

Also known as the Thai Volcano Pepper, the Thai Dragon Pepper delivers intense heat and bold flavor that outpaces Tabasco and Cayenne varieties. While not technically a “super-hot,” this hybrid pepper’s fiery bite makes it feel like one!

Native to Southeast Asia, this pepper is a favorite in Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, and Chinese cuisine for its distinctive spice and bright, fruity undertones.

🌿 Plant Characteristics

The Thai Dragon pepper plant is incredibly prolific, often producing 150–200 peppers per season. Strong branches help support heavy yields of slender, curved pods that reach 2–4 inches long.
These peppers ripen from green to brilliant red, adding a decorative pop of color to gardens, patios, and even indoor containers.

At full maturity, the peppers dry easily, right on the plant or after picking, making them ideal for long-term storage or ornamental use.

If starting from seed isn't for you, we offer Thai Dragon Live Pepper Plants each growing season.

🌶️ Flavor & Heat Level

Expect medium-high heat and fruity, fiery flavor with this Thai chili variety. Its spice level sits around 50,000–100,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), hotter than Tabasco or Cayenne but cooler than Habanero.

Use Thai Dragon peppers to elevate:

  • Stir-fries, curries, soups, and sauces

  • Pickled or fermented recipes

  • Homemade chili flakes or hot oils

  • Decorative dried pepper garlands

🌸 Culinary Inspiration

If you love authentic Thai or Asian-style cuisine, growing Thai Dragon peppers is a must. Their heat and brightness enhance everything from Pad Kra Pao to spicy ramen, and they freeze or dry exceptionally well for year-round use.

⚠️ Growing Note

This hybrid is in its first generation; pepper pod shapes and sizes may vary.

Getting Started

So, you've received your seeds and are wondering what's next? At Pepper Joe's, we're committed to equipping you with everything you need to succeed in germinating the pepper seeds you've chosen. Our mission is to introduce you to a diverse array of pepper varieties, setting the stage for an exciting and rewarding gardening experience. Let's dive into the essentials together.

  • What You'll Need

    Soil and Tray Method

    Seed Starting Supplies
  • Plant your Seeds

    1. Pre-saturate your seed starting soil mix. Ensure the seed starting mix is fully saturated prior to planting your seed.
    2. Make a ¼-inch hole in the center of each seed starting cell. A #2 pencil eraser is a great tool for making these holes.
    3. Place your seed and cover gently with soil.
You can plant up to 4 seeds per cell to help ensure successful germination.
  • 4. Place your heat mat under  your base tray and your humidity dome on top. For best results, set your temperature controller between 75 - 80 degrees.

    5. Place your plant light above the seed starting tray and turn on. Refer to the plant light manufacturers instructions for the optimal distance. Plant light should remain on for 14 to 16 hours per day.

    6. Enjoy watching them grow! See our full instruction page below for more information.

Beautiful plant

Great germination rate , pretty quick and resilient seedling. Held up better than most to my maybe too quick gardening off this year. Now that it’s mature it’s an absolutely beautiful looking plant. May plant some in pots on my front porch next year even. Tons of pods and the first are starting to ripen super excited to cook with!
