Description:

Also known as, Hot Lemon Drop, Kellu Uchu in Peru or Aji Lemon Drop, you’ll never get tired of growing the Lemon Drop pepper! With amazing flavor and stunning growth that's truly unforgettable, you'll enjoy having these ornamental pepper plants in your garden that you can use in your food.

These 3 ft. tall pepper plants are heavy producers of these 2-3" pods. Ripening from green to clear lemon yellow, and sometimes to a dark purple blush, the Yellow Lemon Drop peppers are crinkly, thin-walled pods that look similar to other narrow Aji pepper varieties.

With its surprising spicy, citrus, and tangy flavors, you'll use these peppers for many culinary meals! It does have a hint of lemon and citrus, making it ideal for chicken, fish, and seafood meals. The Lemon Drop pepper Scoville is between 15,000-30,000 SHUs so you’ll notice a medium-heat punch when you eat it raw, a heat similar to the Cayenne, Serrano, or Tabasco. The Aji Lemon pepper also makes delicious pepper powder, flakes, salsas, and hot sauces that'll really make you pucker up!

Fun Fact: The Lemon Drop chili is very popular in Peru as a tangy seasoning for meals and snacks. Its name means “Lima Pepper’ which is referring to the Peruvian city.

Update June 3, 2024: I wrote a review on these seeds on May 19th, claiming a 50% germination rate, which thrilled me because of some pretty limiting factors. Now here we are, a couple weeks later, and I can proudly announce that I actually ended up with a 100% germination rate -- some seeds just took a bit longer to sprout! They have been hardy little seedlings and I've gifted several to friends. I can't wait for the peppers to come in!

Original review, May 19, 2024: I bought these seeds in the summer of 2023 along with lemon drop pepper seedlings. I grew out the seedlings last year and ate their delicious fruit, and was able to overwinter them successfully. April 2024 I finally started my seeds, and having a less-than-ideal seed starting and growing set-up, I actually had seedlings sprout starting around two weeks after I planted them, and continuing into the third week. I had a roughly 50% germination rate, which I was thrilled about given my limited gardening experience, rudimentary set-up, and seeds that were left over from the previous year! Imagine how much better I could have done with grow lights and a heating mat. I am so excited to watch these little guys grow and produce, and I'm also excited to have enough extra that I can gift them to friends!

  • What You'll Need

    Soil and Tray Method

    Seed Starting Supplies
  • Plant your Seeds

    1. Pre-saturate your seed starting soil mix. Ensure the seed starting mix is fully saturated prior to planting your seed.
    2. Make a ¼-inch hole in the center of each seed starting cell. A #2 pencil eraser is a great tool for making these holes.
    3. Place your seed and cover gently with soil.
You can plant up to 4 seeds per cell to help ensure successful germination.
  • 4. Place your heat mat under  your base tray and your humidity dome on top. For best results, set your temperature controller between 75 - 80 degrees.

    5. Place your plant light above the seed starting tray and turn on. Refer to the plant light manufacturers instructions for the optimal distance. Plant light should remain on for 14 to 16 hours per day.

    6. Enjoy watching them grow! See our full instruction page below for more information.
