Description:

Purple Carolina Reaper peppers offer a striking visual twist on one of the world’s hottest pepper varieties. Known for their intense heat and dramatic coloration, this unique Reaper variation produces peppers that develop through a range of purple, green, and pink tones as they mature.

Grown hydroponically in a controlled environment, our Purple Carolina Reaper pepper plants arrive healthy, pest-free, and ready to establish once transplanted.

What You’ll Receive

  • Purple Carolina Reaper pepper plant hydroponically grown in rockwool (no soil)

  • Plant height at shipping: Approx. 4” tall

  • Actively growing with a strong, well-developed root system

  • Care instructions included

  • Bonus: 4-pack orders include a FREE 2 oz compost tea fertilizer packet to help give your plants a strong, healthy start after transplanting

Because our plants are grown hydroponically, they will require an adjustment period and it will take a few weeks for them to acclimate when transplanted into soil or containers. To learn more about our methods and to ensure success, review the sections below Our Live Plant Growing & Shipping Process and When Your Live Pepper Plants Arrive.

About the Purple Carolina Reaper Pepper

The Purple Carolina Reaper is a Capsicum chinense variety bred for extreme heat and distinctive color expression. Plants typically grow up to 4 feet tall and produce peppers that often begin with purple and green tones, gradually shifting through shades of pink before reaching full maturity.

While coloration may vary from plant to plant, the defining characteristic remains the same: intense, Reaper-level heat, often exceeding 1,500,000 Scoville Heat Units. This variety is especially popular among superhot enthusiasts for dried powders and fiery sauces.

  • Heat Level: Extremely hot (often exceeding 1,500,000 Scoville Heat Units)

  • Flavor: Intense heat with subtle fruity undertones

  • Pepper Appearance: Color-variable pods with purple, green, and pink hues

  • Culinary Use: Hot sauces, dried powders, dehydrated flakes, and ultra-spicy recipes

Growing & Care Information

  • Grower Experience Level: Expert

  • Growth Habit: Bushy, productive plant

  • Mature Plant Size: Approximately 4 feet tall

  • Pepper Pod Size: Medium-sized pods

  • Days to Maturity: Approximately 90–110 days from transplant

Our Live Plant Process

Our Live Plant Growing & Shipping Process

At Pepper Joe's, our live pepper plants are grown with care from the very beginning to ensure customers receive strong, healthy plants ready to thrive.

All of our pepper plants are greenhouse grown hydroponically in rockwool, allowing for consistent nutrition, controlled growing conditions, and strong root development. Many varieties are started as early as December, giving plants ample time to mature before shipping season begins in April.

Each plant is grown to approximately 4 inches before being prepared for shipment. Prior to shipping, every plant is individually inspected by a member of our greenhouse team to ensure it meets our quality standards.

Plants are shipped in a protective mini greenhouse made from recycled material, specially sourced to help safeguard live plants during transit. This packaging helps maintain plant structure and reduce stress while traveling to your door.

When Your Live Pepper Plants Arrive

When Your Live Pepper Plants Arrive

Your live pepper plants are shipped in custom packaging to protect them during transit. Some mild wilting after shipping is normal and usually resolves quickly.

Upon arrival:

  • Gently unbox your plant and inspect it.
  • The roots are surrounded by rockwool, a lightweight, soil-free growing material that helps retain moisture and protect the roots. Do not remove the rockwool.
  • Some drooping after shipping is normal. Water immediately upon arrival and allow up to 24 hours for recovery.

  • If your plant arrives with significant damage or doesn't improve after 24 hours, please contact us immediately via our contact form.

Transplanting:

  • Plant the rockwool end 2–3 inches deep into well-draining potting soil using a container at least 1 gallon in size.
  • Water thoroughly after planting and allow excess moisture to drain.

Before moving outdoors:

  • Soil temperatures should be 65°F or warmer
  • Nighttime temperatures should remain above 55°F
  • No risk of frost

Once conditions are right, harden off your new plants gradually by introducing them to outdoor conditions over several days before full sun exposure.

For detailed, step-by-step instructions, visit our Pepper Plant Care page.

If you have any concerns, please reach out through our contact form and our team will be happy to help.

Not impressed

Took forever to get my plants. They are still very small. I doubt I will get any peppers. All my peppers are doing well except these. Not buying any peppers from you guys. Waste of money.

Hi Bryan,

Thank you for reaching out regarding your Purple Carolina Reaper Plant. Purple Carolina Reaper plants are typically smaller. Standard red Reapers grow up to 5 feet tall, but Purple Reapers usually reach about 3 to 4 feet tall. Their peppers are also somewhat smaller, measuring roughly 2 inches in length. If you have any questions, please contact us at pepperjoe.com. Thank you,

No for the faint hearted

This was my last attempt with all the care and precautions learned from several trys. Again I have old 6 Inch high plants. I blame the climate. I spent a small fortune on plants, lights and soil and still pepper less even though the Walmart Habanaro plants are flourishing and going to produce fine. These exotics are not for amateurs.

Hi Eric,
Thanks for sharing your experience. Pepper growing can definitely be tricky, especially with exotic varieties like the Carolina Reaper. Keep experimenting and don't get discouraged—every attempt is a step closer to success! We're here to help if you need any tips. Happy gardening!

First order ever with Pepper Joe's

I ordered three Carolina Reapers…one purple, one orange, one yellow.
The yellow plant was the ‘runt’ of the three. Today, the purple and orange are about 10’ high with some flowers! Sadly, the runt didn’t make it. It happens sometimes. I bought these for my son-in-law who’s a little OCD on growing, harvesting and sharing with family and friends. Rick in Cleveland

Hi Rick,
Thank you for sharing your experience. We're glad the purple and orange plants are thriving, and we're sorry to hear about the yellow. We hope your son-in-law enjoys growing and sharing these peppers. Happy gardening!

I have purchased pepper plants from you before with great success. However, spring was not kind to any of my pepper plants and a few other vegetables. I will be sending in another order soon to try again, hopefully the Mother Nature will be a little kinder.

It died this week

Just wilted and died. Very disappointed.

Hi Joseph,

We’re sorry to hear your plant didn’t survive. Unfortunately, there are several factors that can contribute to plant stress, including transit conditions, transplanting, and environmental changes after arrival.

We always encourage customers to reach out to us at customerservice@pepperjoe.com if a plant appears stressed, along with a photo, so we can help troubleshoot and find the best way to move forward.

Thank you for your understanding,

Peppers that Survived Shipping.

Every pepper plant that survived the shipping process is doing well. I had one cube, that was extremely shriveled and frail when it arrived. I gave it extra treatment trying to nurse it back to health and unfortunately it was dead within the first week. I was looking forward to having a Komodo Pepper but will try again on the next order. All other peppers arrived perfectly and I'm very satisfied. There must have been a packaging issue with that one particular pepper is all

C
Clarence

planted them and every one died after planting yes I put water down when we planted and also watered the next day and they still died

Michelle
One out of two turned out well

They arrived much sooner than expected and were carefully and securely packaged. Both plants looked green and healthy upon arrival and were immediately potted. Although one did appear quite smaller than the other, we held out hope. Unfortunately the smaller one did not make it 😕. The other one however is still doing well although not fruiting yet..Really looking forward to when it does!

Purple reapers

Of the plants I got from you, a few seem as if they are in limbo. These are some of them, I have them under 40% shade cloth protecting them from the intense heat n sun. They are alive and looking fine but I’m not sure I will see any peppers from them, they haven’t grown any since they were planted months ago….sad!

Hi Jim,

My 10 Carolina Reapers

I purchase every year, love Pepper Joes!!! Been buying for many years and always satisfied. Unfortunately this year the seedling were smaller then usual and and were not conducive for transplanting and transitioning outside. I had 3 die intially, and Pepper Joes replaced immediately but out of my 10 plants all but 2 have died already. I did everything the way that I did in previous years, just something went wrong. ☹️. Now we are 55 days in and the 2 survivors look good but still very small. (About 4 inches). I am use to having 3.5 to 4 foot plants by mid September, not sure if we will get there today. Thank God last year we had a great crop and froze peppers to enjoy throughout the year. Looks like I will have to conserve my stockpile as this year (for the first time) we will not have the same results. I don’t blame Pepper Joes, just think the crop this year was a little small or immature and couldn’t survive the transition.

Hi John,
Thank you for taking the time to write this thoughtful review! We're sorry to hear that these plants didn't do well and that most of them died this season. A member of our team will be reaching out directly to try and gather more info to resolve and improve. We look forward to working with you!

Junk

Bought plants from pepper joes and another company followed planting instructions on both sets of plants. All of pepper joes plants died and all the other lived and are growing good. Pepper joes plants looked small and not the best other plants look better all the way around. Call pepper joes about it and they said I didn’t plant them right and did nothing. I’ll never buy from them again.

Hi Jim,
We appreciate you taking the time to leave a review! We're so sorry to hear that your plants died. Since our seedlings were raised indoors, they require a careful, gradual process of hardening off. Our team will be reaching out directly to try and assist you further. Thanks again for your feedback!

Disappointed…

I grow gardens and plant every small year round. Last year I bought one plant and it did SOOO well! It inspired me to buy more. I bought 4 plants and was excited to see how great they would be. 2 were in trouble at arrival and 1 more died shortly after. I only have 1 plant at this point. Quite upsetting.

Chris,
Thank you for your review! We’re so sorry to hear about your experience with buying live pepper plants this year. Our team will be reaching out to you directly so we can provide resolution for the plants that did not survive. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to work with you on a solution!
