Known as the “hawk claw” because of its talon-shaped pepper clusters, the Takanotsume peppers are a very popular ornamental variety coming from Japan. Its heat level reaches up to 30,000 SHUs, making this a great option for spicing up anything you desire.
Takanotsume pepper plants are also incredibly easy to plant to grow, making them perfect for first-time growers to try out. Plants can grow as high as 3 ft. tall and produce good yields of upright pepper clusters. The plant itself also produces beautiful white flowers that stand out amongst the green stems and foliage. Takanotsume peppers reach 2-3” in length and change from green to bright red when mature.
The stingy burning heat from these peppers is what makes them popular to use in a lot of Japanese cuisines. The Takanotsume peppers are also good for drying and making wonderful pepper flakes and spicy powder. Harvest these peppers and save them for later, as they pickle very nicely.
