The Orange Rocoto Pepper, also known as the Orange Manzano Pepper, is commonly translated as the “apple chile”. This pepper is shaped like a small 2” orange apple and features a thick pod flesh - think a smaller and spicier version of an orange bell pepper. Orange Rocoto Pepper plants bloom vibrant blue flowers with hairy leaves and turn from green to orange when mature, featuring unique black seeds. This Orange Manzano pepper has a deliciously fruity, citrus flavor – and paired with medium heat, it makes a great option for salsas and hot sauces.
Originating in the Andes mountain slopes of South America, the Orange Rocoto is one of the most cold-tolerant peppers. It does great in cooler weather and grows in partial shade. Orange Manzano Pepper plants have been cultivated for thousands of years and are very long-lasting. If they avoid frost, you can expect bountiful harvests for up to 15 years.
